What is Night to Shine?
Night to Shine is an unforgettable prom night experience, centered on God’s love, for people with special needs ages 14 and older. Churches from around the world will host Night to Shine on the same night for thousands of honored guests and we want you to be a part of it! Every guest of Night to Shine will enter their prom on a red carpet complete with welcoming friendly paparazzi. Once inside guests will receive VIP treatment including hair and makeup stations, shoe shining stations, corsages and boutonnieres, a karaoke room and of course, dancing! The highlight of the night will come when every one of the Night to Shine guests is crowned as a king or queen of the prom.
Who is Night to Shine for?
The event is open to anyone with physical or cognitive special needs, ages 14 and older. We do not have specific guidelines for the eligibility of guests in relation to the legitimacy or severity of their disabilities. If you have further questions about this, please contact us and we'll be happy to answer those questions.
How old do I need to be to participate?
Our honored guests must be 14 years old or older to register for Night to Shine. There is no upper age limit. Buddies must be at least 16 years old to accompany one of our honored guests. Volunteers as young as 14 years old are allowed to participate. Any volunteer age 14-16 must have a parent or guardian also volunteering at the event.
How much does it cost?
Night to Shine is free for guests to attend. We work with the Tim Tebow Foundation as well as many local business to cover the costs of putting on the event. If you or your business would like to contribute financially or with an in-kind donation, please visit the Donation and Sponsorship page for information.
What should I wear?
Do guests need a date?
No, we encourage each guest to come and enjoy the fun with all of the other honored guests.
What is a buddy?
Buddies accompany and assist their assigned guest throughout the evening, providing companionship and any assistance they may need during the event. They sit with their guest during dinner, accompany them to the various entertainment and specialty stations, and engage with them in conversation. Buddies must be at least 16 years old.
Can I request a friend or family member as a buddy?
Yes. They must attend our volunteer orientation and complete the background check process like all other volunteers. We will do our best to accommodate your request but can't make any guarantees.
I've already gone to Night to Shine, may I come again?
Yes! We'd love to have returning guests attend this year's event. Make sure to choose the location that suits you best—Dickson City or Wilkes-Barre.
What kind of care is available for guests?
In addition to uniformed EMT, safety, law enforcement presence, each Night to Shine location will offer a Sensory Room where guests can go if they become overstimulated. The Sensory Room will provide a quieter environment staffed by volunteers who will be on hand to encourage guests to participate in sensory-friendly activities and offer comfort as needed. Parents and Caregivers will also be close by in the Caregivers Room should they be needed for any reason.
I'm a parent or caretaker, what should I do during the event?
While Night to Shine is happening, parents and caretakers are invited to dinner in the Respite Room. We'll have a full meal and some entertainment awaiting you so you can kick back and relax while those you care for are having the time of their lives! During registration, make sure to let us know how many will be taking advantage of the Respite Room during the event.
Who can volunteer?
Anyone from 14 years old and up can help with this event. However, if the volunteer is 16 or under, they will need to have a parent volunteering at the event as well with them. If a volunteer is under the age of 18 they will need a parent to sign a permission form and waiver before they can participate. All volunteers will be required to attend training, pass required background checks, adhere to the Volunteer Code of Conduct. Click here to register as a volunteer.
What roles can I volunteer for?
There are many ways to get involved with Night to Shine. We'll need hundreds of volunteers for this year's events. Here are the areas we'll be looking for help with. Guest Services: Guest Check-In, Parking, Transportation, Welcome Team, Guest Registration, Safety, Coat Check, etc. Communications: Photography Facilities: General Set-Up, Tear Down, Clean-Up Activities: Karaoke Buddies: Accompany our honored guests for the evening by assisting them with dinner and dancing and helping them have a great time. Specialty Services: Shoe Shiners, Hair & Makeup Food Services: Food Prep, Food Serving
Do volunteers receive training?
Yes. All volunteers will receive training on guest interactions including, how to recognize and avoid the use of offensive terms and phrases, the development of people first language skills, general tips for communicating, and how to prevent and handle awkward or uncomfortable situations. In addition, specific training will be provided for each of the volunteer positions.
What if it snows?
The show must go on—even if it snows! We'll have volunteers and equipment ready if snow is expected. So plan on the event happening regardless of weather conditions, and drive carefully to your Night to Shine location. In the event roads and highways are closed, and we are forced to cancel the event, we will publish notices on all of our websites and social media channels. Unfortunately, due to the massive coordination of catering, volunteers, and entertainment vendors, we would not be able to reschedule the event.
